ALS, also known as Lou Gehrig’s Disease, is a motor neuron disease that affects more than 30,000 people in the United States alone.

A well-known victim of Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) was renowned physicist, Stephen Hawking, but plenty of other people suffer the same fate. The disease causes the degeneration of nerves that control a person’s voluntary muscle movement; eventually making it difficult, if not impossible, for the person to complete basic tasks such as walking, speaking, or breathing. As the disease progresses, patients grow weaker and become trapped in their own non-functional body.

How CBD Works To Relieve ALS

CBD has shown to have numerous health benefits that can relieve the issues caused by ALS; CBD can slow down the degeneration of nerves and reduce the overall pain a patient feels. CBD is an antioxidant and anti-inflammatory so it can combat the symptoms of ALS. While ALS causes muscles to seize up, CBD may help counter this, by relaxing the muscles within a patient’s body and causing less strain than usual. This also can open up the patient’s airway and make it easier for them to breathe throughout the day. While there’s no official statement, many ALS patients have been able to live their life and reduce the amount of heavy pharmaceutical drugs they normally take with the use of CBD. A study performed at the Complutense University in Madrid tested the effects of CBD in mice with ALS. They found that small doses of CBD slowed the progression of the disease, extending the life expectancy in the mice by 6 days on average. This time frame was translated into approximately 3 years for humans.

Dosing Thoughts

Research studies have used doses from 15mg to as high as 600mg. Typical CBD supplements provide 20mg to 25mg. When taking CBD for ALS, dosing can vary widely depending on the severity of the symptoms you are experiencing. One goal to consider is to use CBD to supplement or possibly replace pharmaceuticals you might be taking. CBD is an all-natural alternative that does not build up in your system and cannot be overdosed.

May we suggest trying one of our CUBED Hemp based CBD Tinctures. Available in 1200mg or 3600mg concentrations, mixed with our exclusive Extra Virgin Olive Oil from Italy or NYS-sourced sunflower seed oil. Our Graduated Sprayer makes it simple to dose properly.

It is important to consult with your healthcare provider before starting any supplement program. Most prescribed medications cannot and should not be stopped all at once.
It has been suggested to start with a dose of 10mg to 15mg of CBD twice a day. After a few days, you may want to reduce prescribed meds incrementally while increasing your CBD dosage the following day. Steps of 10mg are suggested to help monitor changes. Monitor your symptoms; be aware of how you feel. Don’t hurry the process. Wait 2 to 3 days between changes. This will allow you to determine the dosing that your body requires to meet your goals, while documenting how your medications interact.
